Today (1st January 2025), I received the latest of a series of emails from César Fernández. Along with his friends, they have reported several sightings this winter of a Black-headed Gull from County Donegal. 2FAA , was ringed as a chick on the 4th June 2019, on the small island at Inch Island Lake. First spotted on the Avilés Estuary in Asturias, Northern Spain, as a juvenile on the 13th February 2020, all 22 re-sightings have been made during the winters since in the same general area. César was reporting on the three latest sightings made on the 20th December, 23rd December and on the 31st December 2024. A photo was also attached taken on the 31st.
To date, there has been no sightings of - 2FAA back on Irish soil. Since 'Covid' times, access to the island on Inch Lake has been limited. It would be fantastic to record the gull back at it's natal colony, but even my Nikon P1000 camera, barely has the reach when used from the shore.
The duration since being ringed, is now 5 years, 6 months and 27 days, and the Avilés Estuary, lies 1,279 kms / 794 miles (S) from County Donegal. I have added the full re-sighting history below :-
